Memorial Inscriptions

Badgeworth parish church and churchyard

To the left of the path leading to Badgeworth Church is the altar tomb of George Gwinnett who died in 1604.  Some of the inscription is still visible.  It reads:

Here lyeth the body of GEORGE
GWINNETT who died December 1604.
And of ELIANOR his wife who died
June 1600 ….
—–

There appears to be more lettering below this inscription and tradition has it that Richard, son of George and Elianor, and Richard’s own son, George, are also buried in the same grave.  Richard died on 18th February 1615.

The tombstone for the Reverend Samuel Gwinnett and his wife, Ann, has been badly neglected over the years but efforts are now being made to restore it to its former glory.  It was recently totally covered in ivy which has recently been cleared.
